Compay Segundo was an essential fixture in the sound of pre-revolutionary Cuban music. He developed a distinctive son style, mixing harder African rhythms with Spanish lyricism. He even invented a unique 7-string guitar called an armonica. He was honored with a Grammy as part of the Buena Vista Social Club when he was 90 years old, drawing attention to other aging but talented Cuban musicians.
