Martin Speake Martin Speake, the British alto saxophonist, who is often compared to Lee Konitz, has his own distinctive sound and an enthusiasm for exploring new contexts and ideas. His most recent collaboration is with Bad Plus pianist Ethan Iverson. Both are very prolific composers but after discussing what music to perform on a British duo tour they opted not to play original music and decided to play ‘standard’ ballads and make them their own.
Speake toured the UK with Ethan Iverson in 2002 when Ethan was the musical director of the Mark Morris Dance Company in New York. As partners they are very well suited; both musicians have the ability to turn a tune in an unexpected direction and to engage the audience with surprising twists and turns which reveal a true eclecticism of taste and ability. Ethan Iverson’s classical phrasing, combined with virtuoso and often extremely powerful jazz technique, make him an unmistakeable presence. Combined with Martin Speake’s pure sound and quirky, often understated interpretations of melody lines the duo creates an interesting take on these familiar songs.
Martin Speake and Ethan Iverson finished off their 2002 UK tour with the recording of a new duo album MY IDEAL.
