The core duo of Eddie Prévost and John Tilbury are filled out here by Christian Wolff, John Butcher and Ute Kanngiesser (a cellist). Eddie Prévost mostly seems to be hiding here, there is some percussion here and the moments that are mostly noticeable when they sound a bit like someone knocking on the door or a big Indian drum, I cannot pick him out much here at least not in the first half. Christian Wolff plays piano here, giving us two pianists, there is some more conventional piano playing here, I think that aught to be Wolff. He also plays some bass – in an interesting way, meaning different from Rowe, I sometimes feel that there is still a tendency in AMM for guess players trying to take Rowe’s spot sonically. He also adds a bit of melodica which is a nice surprise. There are some seemingly electronic sounds here which I figure is Butcher on his sax. The cello is a mix of shrill and conventional, which I dig.
The modus operandi is more or less the same as usual, this is a live performance but doesn’t sound one, it is all improv and is a continuous 50 minute piece. The latter half has a lot of nice moments and is the better part, free improv sometimes takes a while to get really going. This feels like something that has a couple of nice moments that could be distilled and edited and etc. rather then a homogenous piece. It feels rather loose to me but it is still rather nice, I am not the greatest fan in the world of improv. I might have considered four stars for the second half but it takes a while getting there.
