专辑简介

Review
This disc is both an artificial creature and the realization of a dream for a leading Chinese musician and a leading Chinese monk. Without getting into the technical details, which are well-documented in the booklet, this work is an attempt to revive the Buddhist religious music of the south of China in a form it has otherwise ceased to exist in -- namely, chant with instruments. One of China's great musicians and teachers, Chen Zhong, working with the highly placed monk Citing, approached French Sino-musicologist Fran?ois Picard and enlisted the resources of the French label Ocora. Then it was a matter of recruiting a choir of monks and laymen and an instrumental ensemble of professionals and amateurs, mostly students of Zhong. The general sound is a little like Western chant: a large choir with no soloists, seeming to sing wordlessly at times. They are accompanied by bells, cymbals, occasional bangs of the drum, flutes, lutes, ocarina, and zither. In short, the instrumental texture and general phrasing is a lot like Chinese classical music. In addition to the religious music, there is one nice instrumental piece and one theatrical piece sung by a woman. The final chant, "Hymn to Three Jewels," was written in 1930 and was influenced by Protestant hymns -- incredibly, it sounds vaguely like "Rock of Ages"! The album as a whole is not boring, but it's not as peppy as some Chinese music is either. Recommended for fans of chant. ~ Kurt Keefner, All Music Guide [http://www.answers.com/topic/china-fanbai-buddhist-liturgical-chant-hymns-to-the-three-jewels]
