First I purchased another Django Reinhardt 100th birthday box, which was Djangologie 1928-1950. I also wrote a detailed review about it. But afterwads I realised that Manoir de ses rêves is the much better choice, because it contains numerous additional sessions and much more printed information in the 120 page booklet on top. Also the classification system is much better, since the Big Band recordings are seperated on five extra discs, which are packed in sleeves of different colour. Concerning the amount of material, it is really a lot, but still not the complete Django Reinhardt. The booklet states that the only complete Django Reinhardt discography was released by Frémeaux & Associés under the direction of Daniel Nevers (20 seperate double CDs). Manoir de ses rêves contains all of Django Reinhardt's official studio recordings, only a few sessions are left aside "where his participation, whether real or supposed, can only be distinguished." In this context, I think that Manoir de ses rêves is a very reasonable box set, the only thing missing might be some live and Big Band recordings (even though there is one additional disc with some live recordings as well).
Altogether Manoir de ses rêves contains 26 discs which are crammed to the limit in most cases, which means that we are dealing with 640 tracks and a playing time of more than 32 hours. What really stands out here in comparison to the Djangologie 1928-1950 box set are the lots of bebop recordings, which lack there almost completely, partially since it ends with 1950 and leaves out Django Reinhardt's last three years, but there are a lot of bebop recordings from before 1950 here as well, which are criminally underrepresented in the Djangologie 1928-1950 box.
Since both boxes are all about the same price and there is no hearable difference in the mastering as well, I can definitely recommend to choose Manoir de ses rêves if you are looking for an extensive display of Django Reinhardt's career.
