Mad math metal they call it themselves. But if we are to believe the biography of this band they are influenced by bands like Meshuggah, Dillinger Escape Plan and Mike Patton. Those influences are audible, but to describe Cilice as a sum of all parts is actually selling this band short. Cilice is a melting pot in which these influences are molten into a strong alloy which is their own style.
‘Deranged Headtrip’ is a fantastic Total package: great artwork that lets itself get translated into the music by the band. A Gesamtkunstwerk. A band who dares to catch you off guard, and if you can do that, you are in the right spot with me. When ‘God Of Lies’ kicks off the album, you get the impression that you are listening to nu-metal revelation number 665. If you turn the CD off, you are going to miss out on all the fun. Because picturing Cilice as a nu-metal band is actually an insult. The atmosphere of ‘Deranged Headtrip’ is that of the early Fear Factory albums. Musically Fear Factory has more hooks and they sound more staccato than Cilice, the power of Cilice is in that case not in the riff but in the vocals of Dani?l de Jongh. He can do that grunt, the Pattonish harmonies that you have heard with Fantomas and Faith No More, the screaming insanity. And this all coloured by great music from people you know from bands like N3UK and Orphanage…
And that’s not all, because here and there Cilice does the same trick King Crimson did with their eighties albums like ‘Discipline’ and ‘Three Of A Perfect Pair’. Listen to songs like ‘Left Hemisphere’ and the connecting song ‘Right Hemisphere’; or the EBM influence in the sinister ‘Drone’, that sounds even darker than a black metal band, by the addition of a cello. Actually there is one disadvantage with ‘Deranged Headtrip’: with its 36 minutes of playing time it’s just too damn short.
