Practitioners in the field of noise since the early eighties, Cindytalk have since ported over to computer-oriented compositions, and The Crackle Of My Soul marks their first long-player using this approach. Perhaps uncommonly for a noise record, this one took around eight years to complete from start to finish, suggesting that there's less of an emphasis placed on spontaneity here than there so often is in the predominantly improvised world of noise music. While many of the hallmarks of industrial music and modern power electronics are present and embedded in the harshness of this sonic tapestry, there's a strong sense of organisation at work here too, meaning that there are various twists and turns to be digested. Wholly unexpected ruptures in the album's nagging, vicious tonality crop up during the intro to 'Debris Of A Smile', which brings a deluge of rainfall recordings together with ambient, ambling piano, while on 'Our Shadow Remembered', muted vocal echoes haunt strands of squalling feedback.
