Ms. Bell has a very distinctive vocal sound, and many will have recognised the singing be it knocking out hits for Blue Mink, adverts for Big Mac, Wonderfuel Gas, Brooke Bond `D?, or via an ipod full of BV sessions. It?s a soul sound that found origins in a touring gospel spectacular that arrived in Britain from the US in the early 60?s. When the tour finished and the party returned to the States, Ms Bell remained to forge her Pop/Soul career in the UK. Initially signed to EMI?s HMV label, Bell really blossomed when she moved to Phillips in 1965. RPM present the first LP ?Bells A Poppin??, originally released in 1967, along with the singles that preceded it. Highlights include the gospelly ?I Really Got Carried Away?, co-written by Bell and Doris Troy; Cissy Houston?s ?Don?t Come Running To Me?; the long time Northern Soul dancer favourite ?Picture Me Gone? ? all of which is wrapped up with a detailed story by Bob Stanley.
