Elizabeth Maconchy was born in England in 1907, but spent much of her childhood in Ireland, making up her mind to become a composer at the age of six. At the Royal College of Music she studied with Ralph Vaughan Williams, who became a lifelong friend. In the post-war years, she rapidly established a reputation as an original composer.Maconchy's early successes were orchestral, and although she came to be best known for her chamber music, this CD reveals her continuing gift for orchestral writing.
