Ponoka was started by singer/songwriter Rick de Gier, who had been recording songs at home for years when he decided to send a few to the record company Volkoren in 2005. Label owner Minco Eggersman was immediately enthusiastic, and suggested to record an album. This happened in February 2006, with producer Minco assisting Rick on drums, engineer Ren? de Vries playing various instruments, and Alice ten Brinke (ex-Kryptonite Garden) on backing vocals. The album was titled 'Hindsight' and will be in stores February 5th, 2007. It's turned out to be a unique indie record, combining typical singer/songwriter elements with unpolished rock, and poppy electronics with laid-back lo-fi, flavored with subtle, intimate lyrics. If you're looking for references: think Lemonheads, Pavement, Sparklehorse, Eels. So now there was a record, but no band to play it with. A short search through the collective circle of acquaintances resulted in the current Ponoka, with Pim van de Werken (Silence is Sexy) on bass, Theo Nap (ex-Kryptonite Garden) on guitar, Laurens Palsgraaf (ex-Owner's Manual) on keyboards, drummer Lucas Nap (ex-Lunar Module), and singer Alice ten Brinke. Incidentally, Ponoka is the name of a small farming town in Alberta, Canada, where Rick grew up.
