Who -- other than devoted string bassists -- could imagine a solo string bass album being great fun to listen to? It is not entirely clear how Dominic Duval makes this one so interesting, but somehow he does. The prospect, of course, is daunting, and even getting anyone to listen to solo bass for nearly 50 minutes -- really listen to it -- is probably at least half the battle. Part of his secret is his prodigious technique, on display here in full force, a technique that nurses, nay, pummels the instrument for dark, hidden secrets that he somehow discovers within its reaches. Duval is forced to proclaim in the liners that there is no overdubbing on this live recording, because it would be easy to imagine that to be the case on many of the tracks, such as the spectacular (the only word to describe it) "Dolphin Sighting," on which the closest comparison might be British saxophonist Evan Parker's miraculous solo recordings. To enhance the effects, Duval does engage in some legerdemain: he adds -- ever so slightly so that they do not overwhelm his sound -- reverb, echoes, panning, and other effects during (and not after) his performance. These are done totally tastefully and do not detract from the acoustic feel, the best example being "More Nightbird Inventions," where the grand effect is, well, exhilarating and uplifting, not to mention astonishing. The birds are out, but they take on so many different guises that part of the fun is simply trying to anticipate what the next track will bring. The 13 tracks, actually vignettes, incorporate so many different moods, styles, and approaches that it is no wonder that at the time of this recording and continuing into the 21st century, Duval was one of the most popular bassists among the avant-garde progressive set, joining an elite group that included Peter Kowald, William Parker, Barry Guy, and only a few others.
