Damp is a quartet who got together at the Norwegian State Academy of Music in Oslo, Norway. The music can among many things be described as freely modern, acoustic jazz.
The guitar player in the band, Asbj?rn Lerheim, writes all the music. Some influences worth mentioning are musicians like Bill Frisell and Miles Davis, but also musicians like Ornette Coleman and Albert Ayler.
In August 2001, Damp represented Norway under the "European Jazz Contest" in Avignon, France, as one out of four bands from Europe. The festival writes (from the festival program):
“…The compositions are of great quality…” “Damp is presenting jazz with a special maturity and a lot of talent.”
The saxophone player J?rgen Munkeby won the great soloist's price in Avignon.
Asbj?rn Lerheim (guitar)
Also a member of Subtonic, who appeared at the Oslo Jazz Festival 2002 and 2003. Has his background from jazz and improvisation studies at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo.
J?rgen Munkeby (tenor sax)
Is to be heard on many Norwegian records, and has been signed on the Norwegian jazzlabel "Jazzland" with the group Shining. He plays the saxophone with the Bobby Hughes Experience, and is a former member of the band Jaga Jazzist.
Roger Arnzten (bass)
Plays the bass with the German/ Norwegian trumpet player Eckhard Baur with the album "Movements". Is also playing the bass with Subtonic, a vocal featuring quintet, where Asbj?rn also is playing the guitar. Has his own duo and trio with the piano player Morten Qvenild.
Torstein Lofthus (drums)
The former drummer of Bertine Zetlitz Band. He now plays the drums with the quartet Shining. Has participated on many soul and pop albums, and is signed on Jazzland Records with the soul singer Torun Eriksen. Is now studying postgraduate courses at the Norwegian Academy of Music.
