If you're going into the soundtrack for the legendary porn film The Devil in Miss Jones expecting nothing but kitsch, you've got another thing coming. Alden Shuman's score is surprisingly sensitive and nuanced, relying on strings and piano instead of the wah-wah guitars and funk bass that characterize porn music in many listeners' minds. That's probably because when The Devil in Miss Jones was made in the early '70s, porn was considered countercultural and hip, and many filmmakers were trying to make actual films, not just shooting wall-to-wall sex. If you're going to make a real film, you need a real score, and Shuman's work is quite remarkable. It's a sensual, provocative score, long and languid, with lots of unexpected sonic textures. It's a real film score, not just background music, and it works well on its own, even if you've never seen the film before. Just don't expect the stereotypical '70s funk that, for many, defines porn music — this is a far richer experience than that.
