The collaboration between Carlo Maria Giulini and the Philharmonia Orchestra during the 1960s has remained deeply rooted in the memories of English music-lovers as a harmonious idyll which resulted in many truly outstanding concerts, duly preserved on film by the BBC. Here, Classic Archive devotes a second DVD to this collaboration, with Verdi’s two major choral works. Giulini specialised in this repertoire to such an extent that he came to be considered as its finest interpreter. First we have an anthology Requiem Mass with a quartet of singers of a very high order, some of whom have since become legends: Grace Bumbry, Ilva Ligabue, Sandor Konya and Raffaele Arié. Giulini, magnificently supported by the Philharmonia Chorus directed by the famous Wilhelm Pitz, summons up a quasi-mystical spirituality and power which are impressive to witness. Four years later, he is teamed with the same ensemble for the Four Sacred Pieces — the work which earned him a place as one of the greatest conductors of the second half of the 20th century — in which he once again succeeds in achieving an intensity and fervour which leave the listener shaken.
