Debut solo CD from Austrian artist Helmut Sch?fer, who has been called "one of the best musicians in Europe now" by Zbigniew Karkowski. Here is the complete recording of Sch?fer's live performance at the Mills Chapel, Mills College on October 10, 2001, as part of his U.S. tour, plus a short studio remix. The live recording truthfully captures the ambience of the circular-shaped chapel, as well as the sense of exhilaration in the air that evening.
As one of the most energetic and agitated live performers working today, Helmut Sch?fer might change your idea of how a Powerbook can be a live instrument and how an artist is to behave in front of it. Watching him hovering over and caressing his Powerbook keyboard and the 16-channel MIDI controller, one realizes Sch?fer's almost Keith Jarrett-like acrobatics are not theatrical gimmicks at all, but genuine reflection of an innermost upheaval.
Sch?fer is no doubt a master technician, yet unlike most "noisy" artists today, he plays not with gain levels, sample loop-points, or MAX/MSP parameters, but emotions. "Isolated Irritation" is a windows-buzzing, angina-inducing sonic experience. Emotional sound art at its best.
"ISOLATED IRRITATION is to be understood as a description of the artist's inner world (and/or the reflection of it), influenced by the political worldwide development, which seems never again focusing on the science progress in the case of sociality in connection to business. As specially in Europe there is strong history after the right-wing holocaust, which over the years seems to be powerful enough to keep our minds focusing on socialism and human interacting behaviour.
But then the years of super consummation for everyone let us lose the view on what can happen when politicians and business gurus start to force the individual fair against the foreign to distorting their own way content and their real aim. So in these times there is no way to find lovely words, objects, paintings, images, sounds, etc. to works against this progress, in this case I feel it important to go into a direct confrontation.
In such strong times – filled up with right-wing super-class ideas, capitalism, medial-covered loneliness, total consume, etc. – arts have to have a content and not be the entertainment for the working sick egos what mostly we are.
The endpoint seems to be the different possible versions of an isolated irritation."
