From their publication in 1700, Corelli's Op. V sonatas captured Europe's musical imagination and remained the 18th century's most enduringly popular chamber music. Many composers, including Bach, admired, copied and used them as compositional models. By 1800 more than 50 re-editions had appeared. 18th century transcriptions for other instruments also survive. The viola da gamba transcriptions played by Guido Balestracci are from an anonymous manuscript possibly prepared in the 1720s by a German follower of the Dutch gamba virtuoso, Johan Schenk (1660-1712). ”
