This is Sean Bergin's third recording with his band M.O.B. (My Own Band), and this may be the best of the three. The 11-piece group performs eight compositions by Bergin, all of which are characterized by his melodic insights and avant-garde leanings. Featuring some of HollAnd's best -- including drummer Han Bennink, trombonist Walter Weirbos, and cellist Tristan Honsinger -- the group winds its way around the leader's sinewy lines to produce music of considerable depth and humor. At times, the results resemble drunken circus music, but Bergin never lets it get too far out of hand. The slurped trombone, bombastic percussion, and episodic reeds keep it fun and help it to retain its South African roots without sacrificing its Dutch influences. The strong solos and relaxed group dynamics keep the group accessible while never operating at less than the highest levels.
