Boy was I surprised by Strike A Mortal Terror, the 2nd instrumental release from US band Shelter Red. This is the most metal sounding instrumental release I've heard since Blotted Science.
Shelter Red play instrumental progressive metal with post metal influence. This is not a shred feast, wank feast, or atmospheric metal feast. The is rifftastic metal along the lines of Mastodon without all the sludge metal influence or the aggressive vocals. It is much more progressive sounding overall than Mastodon, but I think you get the idea of what to expect.
My first listen in the car with the sub cranked I will give a 4 star. My favorite 2 tracks are the title track and A Confusion of Tongues. I really believe this release has the potential to grow on me after a couple listens. Great stuff!
