Duncan Scott Sheik (born 18 November 1969) is an American Grammy- and Tony-winning singer-songwriter and composer. Sheik initially found success as a singer and songwriter, most notably for his 1996 Grammy-nominated debut single "Barely Breathing". Years later, he expanded his work to include compositions for motion pictures and the Broadway stage, leading him to involvement in the multiple award winning musical Spring Awakening.
Whisper House is the sixth studio album recorded by American singer-songwriter Duncan Sheik, released in the United States on January 27, 2009. The album is Sheik's first for the RCA Victor label, as well as his first in the wake of success from composing music for the Tony award-winning musical Spring Awakening.
The album contains selections from an upcoming original stage musical, also titled Whisper House, with book and additional lyrics by Kyle Jarrow, to be directed by 30 Rock actor Keith Powell. Sheik discussed themes of the musical in an interview for the January 24, 2009 edition National Public Radio's All Things Considered, citing influences from part of his childhood spent around Hilton Head, South Carolina, and recalling its iconic lighthouse and the ghost stories he shared there with friends.
The album's first single, "Earthbound Starlight", debuted via the "Pop Candy" blog on USAToday.com on January 15, 2009. A video for the song was released five days later.On Sheik's official website, streaming audio was made available for the album's first single, as well as its first and second tracks, in advance of the album release.
