专辑简介

Tom Zé has studied the Samba, the Pagode, and now he delves into Bossa Nova. At the end of the day the Maestro has been studying Samba all the time, given that Pagode and Bossa Nova are offspring of the Brazilian matrix-genre. Truth be told, there are huge differences between the two sub-genres. However, it is worth retaining the notion that while Pagode has been narrowed down since its inception with Dem?nios da Garoa to its rampant vulgarisation with Zeca Pagodinho, Bossa Nova enlarged Samba epistemes, became larger than life, and feels itself comfortable in uncharted aesthetical territory until today.
Estudando a Bossa, like a good dish, will please expert gourmets and gluttons. The former will find all semiotic and factual references to the insides and ‘outsides’ of Bossa Nova as music as well as a historical event, told through compositions and releases; there’s plenty of ‘deconstruction’ to mull over. The gluttons will replenish themselves on refined, unique vocals, and rhythm lines in hardcore Bossa Nova register, pristine production and sound, and remarkable guest participations.
“Amor do Rio” could be the working track of the album, so sublime it is in all pre-requisites and, if it was not enough, showcasing the Brazilian perfect blend between Chris Connor and Bill Withers, long-term Tom Zé’s musical partner Zélia Duncan, whose performance is stunning. Impersonating Bossa Nova’s trans-cultural drives, there came an American with a Scottish birth certificate: David Byrne, a gringo emblem in flesh and bones, who delivers with aplomb, singing low and understatedly, along the most rigid soft Bossa Nova imperatives. In track 3, “Jo?o nos Tribunais” (Jo?o in the Tribunals), the Maestro playing the role of lawyer amasses arguments to prove that Jo?o Gilberto was the inventor of Bossa Nova, and he surely comes across with his case.
All in all, Tom Zé’s magnifying lenses are so inspired that in the unlikely hypothesis that he fails in the empirical part of his studies, music always gets augmented.
  Highly recommended.
