Album Notes
tracks 1-5 the first half of the album began life as keys, beats and basslines tracked by asher in an improve style on his computer over the course of 2004 at home between projects. still sounding very raw, the duo took these basic building blocks into harmony studios in february 2005 and used them, again in an improve manner. to fashion more evolved pieces. when they started, neither asher nor joel had any preconceived idea of how the finished product would sound, in fact several studio mishaps along the way radically altered the process, providing new and creative direction.
tracks 6-12 the second half of this album was recorded at live shows in the humboldt and portland, both as full improvisations. in humboldt, the set was recorded by a taper the band had yet to meet, and it wasn’t until months later that they happened across him on an online taper list! the last 2 tracks come from a set at surrounded by ninjas “home venue”, the goodfoot in portland, oregon. surrounded by ninjas played a 70 minute opening set for jacob fred jazz odyssey, heroes for surrounded by ninjas in the improve realm. this section of the night (included here unedited except of the removal of an uncleared sample) was the last part of the set, when the room was packed full of people with open ears and open minds, inspiring one of surrounded by ninjas favorite moments.
