This is one of those legendary meetings usually only dreamed about: Two of Britain's greatest freestyle pianists, Howard Riley and Keith Tippett, walked on-stage without any prior discussions about what they would play, and created something of lasting value. This type of meeting is risky: Even in the best of circumstances it can fail. The secret here is that each listens closely to the other, and the results sound as though the two had prepared extensively for the occasion. They ebb and flow almost as a single voice. The opening "First Encounter" is alternatively delicate, majestic, and fiery, with wonderful interplay covering the history of the jazz piano. Along the way are influences as diverse as Cecil Taylor and James P. Johnson. "Two in One, Pt. 1" begins romantically, even majestically, although it slowly builds in intensity to an exhausting finale, while the much longer "Pt. 2" opens up with radical strains incorporating vocalizing and postmodern techniques, and then marches down a path that reflects a plethora of influences, resulting in a draining, though exhilarating, listening experience. The closing "Twenty First Century Blues" dips way back, as the pianists get "down and dirty," an uplifting end for those fortunate enough to have witnessed this history lesson firsthand. ~ Steven Loewy, All Music Guide
