This is pianist Burton Green's first solo album since 1983, when he produced Zephyr for his own Button Nose Records. While Greene is probably best known for his avant-garde forays in the 1960s, he has since developed a more conservative style. The generous recording time on this album covers ten tracks, seven of which are compositions by Greene, two by Thelonious Monk, and one by pianist Bill Evans. Greene proves himself an entertaining performer, mixing genres while inserting quotes and cute phrases. He spans a spectrum of moods, from introspective doodling to upbeat, joyous exuberance. While he deploys occasional dissonance, he also draws from the wells of klezmer, circus music, and the blues. The only negative is a lack of focus that detracts somewhat, leaving the listener a tad unfulfilled. ~ Steve Loewy, All Music Guide
