专辑简介
Tenor saxophonist Avram Fefer, pianist Bobby Few, and bassist Wilber Morris played an adventurous trio gig at Tonic, one of New York's avant-garde havens, in June of 2000. Their set is fully documented on this Boxholder release. Consisting of four long pieces, the disc begins with Few's "Continental Jazz Express," an insistent theme followed by bouts of busy piano underscored by a tick-tocking bassline. Morris' dark-hued ballad "Chazz" changes the pace, finding Fefer in a gruff and bluesy mood. Next is Fefer's "Loss (For Flo)," which he's recorded in at least two other contexts; this version states the hypnotic theme quietly and drifts in and out of an ethereal, reflective space, moving back into tempo for a wrenching tenor solo. Charles Mingus' "Nostalgia in Times Square" wraps up the set in fairly casual swing time -- until the ten-minute-long, free-form coda, that is. It's an inspiring, multi-generational affair; the absence of drums, moreover, makes for a rather intimate encounter with Fefer's playing. ~ David R. Adler, All Music Guide
