专辑简介

Imagine yourself cooped up at home on a dreary, rainy day, with nothing but the view outside the window for company. All you need now to complete your tableaux of melancholic perfection is some...music, perhaps?
Enter Leslie Low’s Worm, which marks a welcome return to his folk singer-songwriter roots after a brief detour to instrumental sound art in his first solo album, Volcanoes. Previously of the now-defunct veteran local band, Humpback Oak, and the current frontman of indie “space rock” band The Observatory, Leslie Low once again proves his versatility and musical prowess with his latest solo offering.
Certainly, Worm is not a blockbuster album; but neither does it pretend to be. The album features eleven acoustic numbers delivered in Leslie Low’s familiar mellifluent vocals, in which the man, armed only with his music, wistfully waxes lyrical about life, loss, people, and being small.
In all its acoustic nakedness, however, the simple lyrics and musical arrangements are only deceptively so. The pleasant enough guitar harmonies are only fleeting glimpses of optimism that is otherwise shadowed by the omniscient hushed, gentle sadness reminiscent of acoustic legend Nick Drake himself.
This album is not for thrill-seekers or people who crave too much variety; the beauty of Worm lies in its simplicity and the artiste’s ability to speak volumes with his quiet, contemplative songs. An example is the track, “Dull Boy”, a simple, unassuming song all of four short verses long that only serves bring to one’s attention Leslie’s vocal timbre and the beauty of brevity. A personal favourite of mine is “Behind The Woods”, in which the soft twanging of guitars, the subtle use of a harmonica and muted piano, dance in the air around your ears like bright little sparks before dissolving back into the rest of the mellow music, just as Leslie sings about “a time to sail away/ Above the din of days/ To a place behind the woods they say”.
Of course, this album is not perfect; as mentioned before, some may tire of the quietude that remains a constant in this album soon enough. But for all its ethereality and delicacy, Worm is by no means lacking in substance, and should prove as tasty an earcandy — earWorm? — for most as it was for this reviewer. Or perhaps it was the rainy day that did it; either way, Worm is a delectable album that does not disappoint.
