Born in Hungary, Lili Kraus was a pupil of two great twentieth century composers, Bartok and Kodaly. She continued her studies with Artur Schnabel in Vienna and by the age of twenty was appointed a full professor at the Vienna Academy. She had begun an international concert career in the 1930's but it was interrpted during the Second World War: in the midst of an Asian tour she was arrested and interned by the Japanese. After three years of imprisonment, Mme Kraus became a British subject and resumed a full, active performing and teaching career. She first appeared in the United States in 1949 and over the years performed concertos with all the major American orchestras. Her all-Schubert recital in Carnegie Hall was a great triumph, as were her many appearances at the Mostly Mozart and Tanglewood festivals. Mme. Kraus died Nov. 6, 1986 in Asheville, North Carolina.
