As stated in the title of my review, this album has earned a spot in my favorite albums of all time. It has endured the test of 2 years time, and I find it still having a spot in my travel case, without fail. Rarely do I find albums that I never get tired of; "Dynasty" is one of them.
The chill mood set over some incredibly engaging beats are what drives this album to its fullest. From the onset, we are treated to some very ethereal and peaceful synth sounds -- with plenty of editing to make them sound organic. Layered above or below these soothing fragments are some of the most interesting-sounding organic beats I've heard in a while. Weave in some great soundbyte clips of drunken girls at parties (amongst others), and you've got a great mix of sound.
The overall feel of this album is somewhat akin to Boards of Canada's "Music Has The Right To Children", but more organic. I say more organic because the beats sound more like they are coming off a drum set than from a drum machine, and the use of vocal clips grounds this album more in "reality" than the aformentioned album by Boards of Canada. Regardless of the use of different sounds, the same nostalgic feeling present in "Music Has The Right To Children" is found in "Dynasty" in spades, with one caveat; the Boards of Canada offering will make you nostalgic of your childhood, while "Dynasty" will make you nostalgic of college and the relaxation of post-party syndrome.
