The Castilian composer and virtuoso Francisco Tárrega (1852-1909) has been considered the father of the twentieth century Spanish guitar. With a refined late-romantic sensitivity, Tárrega was able to give his instrument a variety of technical and stylistic resources which would make it the protagonist of an epoch in Spanish musical history. On the Spanish label Verso, Fernando Espí offers a superb recital with some of Tárrega’s best-known works (Capricio árabe, Recuerdos de la Alhambra, Lágrima), and others not so well-known (Oremus, Prelude in E major), in which the young performer from Alicante deploys a complete range of virtuosic qualities of great beauty, submerging the listener not just in the work of one of the great maestros of Spanish music, but also in the spirit of an entire age.
