专辑简介

Lush and otherworldly, the debut album from Butterfly Messiah is poetry you can dance to...a unique blend of gothic, synthpop, and ambient with haunting atmospheres reflecting a realm of magic and the pagan past.

After hearing a few tracks from this group on mp3.com, I was very impressed. So when I managed to get my hands on their album Priestess and their EP It's Time, I was not disappointed in what I heard. As I listen to the album, it is fast becoming one of my favorites in this crossover genre. The way they manage to combine Synthpop with Gothic and Mystical elements is really great. Some artists that attempt this just don't pull it off, while those that do are some of my favorites. The music is darker and more emotional and spellbinding than typical Synthpop. This is what real Darkwave music is all about. The way the male vocals seem to somewhat chant and sing the lyrics on many of the faster tracks is catchy, especially with the angelic female vocals in the background like the first song "Land Beneath the Waves" and "Introspection". Then you have a pure angelic feeling, yet with a sinister tone on "The Wicked" with it's ethereal tempo and style. "Serpentine" is another favorite of mine as it picks up the pace and the edge a bit. The grinding synths add a nice touch to it all and then on top of that you add somewhat edgy female vocals. This track stands alone with it's very fast-paced, edgy nature. The rest of the album is somewhat more mid-tempo with siren-like vocals mixed in with sometimes a slow ethereal nature and sometimes a more up-beat rhythm. But no matter what, the beauty really comes through it all. After the very slow and mystical "When Autumn to Winter Resigns" with it's beautiful acappella tune, the finale to this album is a nice, catchy ending "Reverie". It slowly builds in pace and volume as more synths are added and the dreamy vocals carry you away to that mysterious place that resides in our dreams. This is an excellent album that I highly recommend for fans of Gothic/Darkwave music. Fans of Claire Voyant and her different side projects should enjoy this as well as those that loved the electro-goth sounds of Love is Colder Than Death.

If you failed Poetry 101, dislike symbolism, and don't care all that much for sythpop industrial music-dance tracks, then Priestess would probably not be your musical cup of tea. But if those warnings don't frighten you off, then you'll probably agree with me that Priestess is well worth the price of admission. Settle in for a treat, because Priestess is "poetry in motion" as Shannon Garson's delicate vocals float airily throughout the album, providing a sharply feminine yin contrast for Robert Nightshade's deeply rich and darkly masculine musical musings. On the pounding dance beat opening track, "Land Beneath the Waves," Nighshade's deep-as-a-canyon monotone vocals set the perfect tone for the group's back-from-the-dead, darkly eloquent lyrics: "Who can tell me how long I've bled/I left my reasoning for dead/I fill the void in with your smiles/I left my nightmares in a pile." Deeper on into the CD, Garson's light-as-air vocals meld wonderfully with Nightshade's dark-as-night persona on such imagery-rich tracks as the operatic, lushly potent, "Visitor." "Visitor" is a richly visual track filled with delicately etched, poetic lyrics: "We loved and we were one/Blossoms fell into our open palms." Equally entrancing is the hypnotic and hauntingly poetic melody on the final track of the CD: "Reverie," a brief, languid melody, bursting with powerful images: "My light is the moon/She whispers of the sun/The cat of the sky." Shannon's seasoned voice wraps itself delicately around each word like a silk-spun cloud, subtle and dreamlike, casting a musical spell. Priestess is a stunning tapestry of poetic lyrics that are dark as the night, yet as light on your ears as the morning mist. If you're a fan of synthpop accompanied by lyrics of depth, substance, and rich poetic imagery, this one's for you. Butterfly Messiah is a mega-talented and 110 degrees burning hot group of talented artists. I can't wait to see what's brewing on their upcoming album, Eternal.
