Never judge a CD by its cover sleeve. Or especially its title. What started out as a somewhat cynical "hmm..." at the album turned into a pleasantly surprised "hmmm!" after cruising down the track list.
Filled with modest sing-along songs, I Stole My Neighbour's CD opened with "Livin' Thing" -- a breezy crooning number by Beautiful South -- which aptly set the tone for the rest of the bittersweet tracks to come. As understatedly inspiring as its thieving title might suggest, the album is mostly made up of lesser known treasures by slightly off-the-current-spotlight acts such as Indigo Girls, Phantom Planet, Bic Runga, Tori Amos, Splender and Dido; artists who have, nonetheless, earned their respective glories in recent years.
Highlights include the celestial vocals of Sarah McLachlan's "Sweet Surrender," the sweet sighing acoustics of Lightning Seeds' "Perfect" as well as the signature tongue-in-cheek rendition of Cake's "Opera Singer" and Fiona Apple's heart-tugging drawl in "Paper Bag."
The only cover comes from a Wheatus remake of Erasure's "A Little Respect." In contrast to the synth pop original, Wheatus puts a rockier strum to the tune which ironically, lacks a certain guts that keeps their version a notch beneath the energetic '80s classic but allows it to fit snugly into this humble feel good collection.
One's only quip remains the rather non-seductive album title. Perhaps a more appropriate -- and informative, no doubt longer -- line "Songs to croon to on a lonely Friday evening" might suffice. (By Jocelyn Chua via MTV Asia)
