A mix of woozy slide guitar, swampy trombone, sparse and erratic percussion, tape hiss, amp buzz, shortwave interference and dark doomy brilliance. Like a ghostly, indie rock New Orleans funeral jazz band or Roland S. Howard fronting the Dead C. Haunting, mesmerizing, gorgeously raucous, dreamily creepy and absolutely unlike anything you have ever heard."- Tumult.
One of the earliest visual expressions of La Danse Macabre was a mural painted in a Franciscan convent around 1425. The painting and accompanying verses pictured the personification of Death engaging in conversation with various people, representing all ranks and positions of society, and inviting them to his dance. If the muralist had been looking for a soundtrack to accompany his work, he could have done worse than Knife Hits. Reeks and the Wrecks have made an absolute clutter of an album; it's not a garage sale clutter of Precious Moments figurines and Members Only jackets, mind you, but a monumental House on the Rock mess of creepy, curious, beautiful instrumental junk, all carefully collected and coerced into a joyfully creaky dance.
Opener "Blue Ballroom" kicks off with the sound that old televisions make you turn them off -- a narrowing tunnel of sound that marks the transition from one place to an entirely new locale. We are then treated to screaming, barking dogs, an ominous bass line and a seedy trombone swagger; it's almost as if Reeks and the Wrecks were trying to recreate the experience of waking up in a remote Louisiana swamp, amid a throng of pygmy jewel thieves, and asking yourself, "Where the fuck am I?"
The evocative moments don't end there. "Mosquito Cash Diamond Gun" is the sound of Morphine's saxophones digging out of the band's grave and crashing through the streets, dancing hand-in-hand with The Ghastly Ones' surf-style guitars. Dreamy yet disturbing six-strings open the eight minute "Maui Wow Wow", which reveals itself as a slowly flowering hypnotic zombie lurch. Looping, laundry-cycle guitar distortion, stark, skeleton-crew drums and a persistent trombone sail onto shore like a lazy, drunken funeral pyre on "Nutsack Cadillac". In short, Knife Hits is one sinister racket, an unmanned pirate ship that's listing blindly but plodding determinedly ahead.
Unfortunately, there will not be another Reeks and the Wrecks album; main man and instrument builder Orion Satushek was killed in an auto accident prior to Knife Hits' release. With that in mind, find a copy while you can. Put it on, dim the lights, and join the dance.
