史图尔曼1949年生于巴西里约热内卢，音乐世家，20岁到意大利学习，72年获莱比锡巴赫音乐比赛亚军。他演奏生涯的顶峰是在八十年代初，在伦敦阿尔伯特音乐厅、伊丽莎白厅连续获得凯旋和最高评价。后来为飞利浦录制了一系列巴赫唱片。如今他主要为BIS和Actés唱片录音。从这张唱片听来，其特点是干净流利，音色非常圆润，个性并不强。巴赫网上对这张唱片上有很有趣的争论，兹录于下： from: www.jsbach.org/

A disappointing, very tepid performance of some marvelous pieces. It feels rushed by the pianist and draws out none of the incredible range of feeling of these works. While the pianist is technically competent, he seems to show no soul in these very soulful works. I found this to be a much inferior recording to the Gould version. The sound is oddly muffled as well, dulling an already banal performance. It almost sounds as if there is a blanket over the piano with poor articulation of some very wonderfully staccato sections. For some odd reason, moreover, the liner notes say literally nothing about Bach or the pieces, only several translations of fulsome praise about the performer. Perhaps because this is an early recording the music offered is, furthermore, rather stingy in its length.

I have recently heard this recording again and I have to tell you that I completly disagree with the comments you have posted in your site. These are wonderfully articulated,stylish and dramatic performances.One forgets all arguments about the appropriatness of the modern piano,such is the integrity and meaningfulness of these interpretations.The piano playing is brilliant and controlled, the phrasing lyrical yet restrain, and the music flows endlessly. These are marvellous performances. I%m afraid that your critic was having a bad hair day.
