Souvenir are back with "Présage de l'hiver", a CD EP which is an extraordinary foretaste of their forthcoming third album, "Des équilibres", due out in February 2005.
"Présage de l'hiver" is a wintery advance of the album in which the band display their usual penchant for tasteful melody. This is no less than an ode to the arrival of winter in which Patricia proves that her evolution as a singer has taken her to unexpected heights. The song veers form acoustic textures to electronica elements, in yet another remarkable musical achievement. Complete with beautiful string and brass arrangements with a tinge of John Barry, this is a wonderfully chilly masterpiece.
The other songs in the EP are equally stunning. All of them are unreleased songs, exclusive to this record: "Boule de flipper", "La valse des regrets" and "Des tours pour Audrey". "Boule de flipper" is a charming cover version of an obscure French 80's hit by Corynne Charby, which Souvenir have played live regularly for the past years. This specially-recorded studio version retains all the magic of their live renditions. "La valse des regrets", is a surprising, delicate piece in which Patricia’s performance is nothing short of remarkable… again! Last but not least, a brand new version of "Des tours pour Audrey", recorded live at Spanish National TV programme Los Conciertos de Radio 3 (RTVE), with a radical reworking of the original arrangement of the song, which first appeared in their first album, "Points de suspension".
This is, therefore, a real treat for Souvenir aficionados, with beautiful cover art by Javier Aramburu, which should satisfy every fan of Jaime and Patricia. For them, "Présage de l'hiver" is the first step in a year full of promising expectations, which will be fully realized when "Des équilibres", their extraordinary third album, is out.
