fantastic book & cd-box set covering the sound-sculpture work of il gruppo’s mario bertoncini from the early 70s through present-day...
the 196-page book offers a plethora of photos of the sculptures themselves (inhabiting a middle-ground between moholy-nagy’s 1930 “light-space modulator” and harry bertoia’s massed brass rods), a bio by gianmarino borio, and an extended, eminently readable/confounding musing by bertoncini himself (taking form as a conversation between “menippus” (m) and “bremonte” (b) reading more like a donald barthelme short-story than an academic exercise...) touching on the theory behind and construction of the aeolian harps, the history of electronic music, etc...
the disc (housed in a separate box with a separate 28-page booklet) contains 6 long-form examples of the aeolian harps in action; the 6th a piece being “for 8 brass instruments and 8-channel electronic treatment of sound samples taken from one of the sound sculptures belonging to venti (1982)” - alternatingly distant and close-up field-documents of the instruments in action, played either by the wind or performed pn by humans in gallery-settings...
top-notch presentation of important yet somehow unknown music; the die schachtel modus in a nutshell. highly recommended !!!
