After the Australian Idol experience, Bobby returned to his band, The Omega 3, with whom he’d released an EP in 2003. Explaining the name, Bobby says: “I was painting a house with a friend. He listened to a lot of punk and thought ‘The Omega 3’ was a great name for a band. Of course, Omega 3 supplements are now all the rage – I even take them myself.”
Bobby and his band produced Out Front themselves. “For us, this is a really modest step,” Bobby says. “There are no bells and whistles, we just worked with what we had.” Out Front features 10 Bobby originals and a cover of Under The Milky Way, a song that Bobby did on Idol (Mark Holden called it “a space-age croon”). Whatever way you look at it, Out Front is a remarkable record. The word “journey” is over-used when it comes to Idol contestants, but it’s appropriate when you look at Bobby’s story. It’s been quite a trip already, but you get the feeling that Out Front is just the start.

I admit it, my house is an Australian Idol-free zone – I’ve never thought it had very much to do with real music. And the stuff I’d seen released by its various winners and others seemed to confirm that – technically proficient, manufactured pop for short attention spans. But I may have to modify that opinion with Bobby Flynn (even if I never watch the show). Instead of pre-masticated tunes and puffed-up production, Flynn and his band The Omega Three decamped to Byron Bay to work up their songs, ten originals and one hangover from the Idol days, The Church’s Under The Milky Way, complete with lazy reggae vibe. Apart from some embellishments like strings in The Boy Had Trouble, it’s a deceptively lowkey sound, an unassuming summery feel that relies more on a refreshing breeziness with some jazz and folk inflections. Yet there’s a quiet, measured precision at work here - the songs are consistently inviting, with a natural charm. But the centrepiece of these 11 songs is Flynn’s laconic but undulating lilt, a disarming blend of Jack Johnson and Jeff Buckley, languid and liquid at the same time. And that’s no idle achievement at all.
