Upon hearing about the physical release of Conquest I wasted no time heading off to pick it up, like I do with pretty much everything that The White Stripes release by now. I was previously familiar with the B-sides and of course "Conquest" from Icky Thump. Perhaps the best and the most interesting aspect of Conquest is the collaboration between Jack and Meg White with Beck on the B-sides. Beck provides vocals and piano work on "It's My Fault for Being Famous" while showcasing his guitar skills on "Honey, We Can't Afford to Look This Cheap". Reading the insert reveals that Beck also participated in the production of Conquest and every track with the lone exception of the album cut of "Conquest" were recorded in his living room. I'm a big fan of all the songs on this release. The B-sides really showcase Jack White's ability as a songwriter. "It's My Fault for Being Famous" drips with sarcasm and wit and is something the duo pull off really well. As a whole, the songs sound more like stuff recorded around the time Get Behind Me Satan was released. I know that can be a polarizing album, but even if that wasn't your favorite release by The White Stripes I would still consider picking up Conquest and finding out just how great of a team Jack, Meg and Beck can make.
