At first, this feels like a hint of Spoon and other well-greased indie rock, with catchy tom tom patterns, wiry antenna guitar trips, and sonic outbursts at the tail end, when the dual gender vocals swim in a hydroelectric complex of boy/girl hipsterness. The rest of the album doesn’t really unfold in quite the same vein; instead of those tight, jittery, conflicting functions, it goes into a deep well of Beach Boys, XTC, and Beatles, a tundra that does connect the dots between eras but doesn’t leave me waning to keenly follow-up their logic. The intro to “We Love to Build” actually feels very Weezer, and the song mostly stays centered in that navigation report, but the production feels modest, undersized, and fertile, letting the band explore some quirks. “Some day they will find us in a car/ in the mud below the bay,” they sing ruefully on “Miles from our Fears,” with keyboards setting forth the dot dash pace. The voice has that Modest Mouse kind of halted warmth, that vibe of small assurance and indirect pondering that sounds like it’s three coffee tables away, carving up a gray tone. Mostly, like tracks like “Pocket Full of Gold,” the music is tasteful, not cooing but counseling, and well cemented in style, while “St. Cecelia” is prone to pop ghost wandering.
