Haemorrhage (Spain) begins with a useless intro track and then gets going with four tracks of merciless gore grind. I don't like this as much as their last full-length, but that's more due to the recording than anything. I like the lead breaks, the riffs are solid, etc. But the sound is a little unbalanced. I can get used to it for sure, but it needs something more... The vocals and drums tend to dominate the mix, with the bass being pretty much indecipherable and the guitars sort of becoming a blur behind the vocals. I can't help but mention the ever-present Carcass influence, but I do like the speed and energy of their songwriting, even if the songs don't really stand apart from one another. Of course the Grave cover ("Deformed") is distinct, and definitely kicks ass... but it's not necessarily good when the best song on your half of a split isn't one of your own (though "In the Name of Sanity" is pretty damn slick). As usual the lyrics are worthless in my opinion, but whatever. "I mince up your limbs, With psychotic excitement, I gloat on the gore, Munching body fragments..." Impaled also start out with a useless intro (granted it does introduce the "concept" of their set of tracks), and then they rage through six tracks of death/thrash that, to me, is starting to sound a bit different from their past work. Of course the vocals still bear a striking similarity to Carcass, but a lot of the riffs are in more of a thrashy vein, getting more into the death metal side of things with the thicker, chunkier rhythms. But they still have a good sense of melody (check out "The Patients are Revolting"), I love the crazy solos, and the songs aren't boring in the least. Shit, "Psycho-Surgery" is a fucking classic, chock full of tempo changes and some totally old school Swedish death metal sounding breaks that totally rule. And yeah, they do a cover too. "Helga Lost Her Head", by Repulsion. Good stuff. The lyrics follow the general scheme of over the top medical terminology, and while better than Haemorrhage's, really all you need are the names of the solos: "Fitibulating Moneosis and the Spondilation of Neologisms", for example. That's just classic shit right there. As far as the sound, it's raw, but not bad. It could use some work, but I can deal with it. The only thing that slightly annoys me is that the vocals and drums seem to stand out too much. However, the bass tone is really evident, and that makes a huge difference. I also like the dirty but still clear texture of the guitars. I wish the mix was tighter, as with no gaps these songs would sound more powerful, but it's alright. Now, the layout here is a fucking atrocious, and I'm a bit stunned as to why. The band photos are okay (Impaled's of course take the cake), and the illustration on the back isn't so bad, but the rest of the booklet looks like crap, and the cover is one of the worst covers I've ever seen. A bloody guy with green shit foaming out of his mouth, chained down in a straightjacket... playing the role of the "Dementia Rex" character. Lame. It wouldn't be so bad if it was all illustrated or something. But god damn, the cover makes me want nothing to do with this. Was the disc not comprised of two solid bands I'd never have given this a second glance. Seriously, someone should've given this more thought. The record looks fucking stupid. For a release that's been three years in the making, I'd like to have believed this would be stronger than it is. It's definitely not bad, but there's too much wasted time on silly intros, spoken passages, samples, senseless instrumentals, etc. Haemorrhage's material kind of bores me, but I'm all for Impaled's half. I don't know, I was just hoping for a better release than this overall.
