"Die Blutgr?fin" turns out to be a multi-layered and opulent work of art, which will last longer than just the present time. This album is not made to listen to while doing other things. The listener must be prepared to get deeply engaged in the multiple and social events. Without any doubt "Die Blutgr?fin" is a compositionary and musical masterpiece, not to be equalled easily. Definitely one of the highlights of the year 2006.

Since quite a while Untoten are one of the most creative bands of the scene - now they can also be called one of the most productive ones!
It was only last year when Untoten released the excellent final album of their much praised "Grabsteinland"- trilogy and now they are back with another one and not only with one CD - "Die Blutgr?fin" is a double-CD! It?s about the life of the legendary Elisabeth Bathory, who lived in Hungary around 1600 and is said to have killed about 600 girls and bathed in their blood to gain eternal youth. David A. Line and Greta Csatlos are a wonderful duo and certainly the perfect cast for this topic. "Die Blutgr?fin" is more than a gothic record, it is a kind of "Singspiel in two acts", which will be liked by fans of the black romanticism und which is nevertheless undead (untot) as well. The story of Bathory is told from her childhood years until her late revenge. Romantic sounds and a prevailing dark mood make "Die Blutgr?fin" a perfect companion for the cold season of the year - you want to sit by the fireside and listen to the sound of Untoten.

Once again Untoten dare to be musical pioneers. Their record, which is dedicated to Elisabeth Bathory, the Blood Countess, is a modern opera - a black romantic "singspiel", like the two of them call it - with two acts, seven scenes, different locations and characters and even stage directions. As all of the characters are sung by Greta and David, we can enjoy a duet by the two of them for the first time in years. And what a wonderful duet it is! "Blutrot, die Liebe" is hauntingly beautiful und full of passion and has a catchy hookline. A song that makes you shiver. Wilder and even more powerful - "Koste das Blut", a song telling the story of Elisabeth?s wedding at the age of eleven. Greta?s truly beautiful and talented use of her voice, the way she?s using different voices for different characters is really impressive. You can clearly recognize Henriette, die Geisterm?dchen and Elisabeth during different periods of her life, beginning with the cruel child in "Der Singvogel" and ending with the old, incarcerated woman in "Hure der Finsternis".
The change of voice from weak woman begging for mercy to angry demon yelling curses is remarkable.
This song marks the end of part 1 (and of the first CD as well).
Act 2 has a few catchy songs as well:
"Ficzko", "Die Grube und das Pendel", a song which is beautiful in a very cruel way, and finally "Die Zeit steht still",
a song which is tender and vicios at the same time. Greta is transposing the psychological depths of the character by the means of belcanto and - these are the best parts - she drowns the wonderful melodies in blood.
Thunder and lightning at the end:
"Saat des B?sen" rocks! Drop the curtain! Encore!
Untoten are the avantgarde of a new, black romanticism, one of the rare bands of the scene with a innovative vision of art.
