The last time Savage Republic released a full-length album Michael Jackson was putting a deposit down for Neverland, a different Bush was in the White House and this writer was still in nursery school. Back then the band were pioneers of the art-punk scene- combining grimy hardcore with harsh, industrial noise and other eccentric influences. 18 years later though and the LA oddballs are back with the cryptically-titled ‘1938’ and a slower, if no less dark, dramatic or disturbing sound.
　　The starry-eyed ‘Siam’ sets out the band’s new stall brilliantly, replacing scrap-metal mentalism with gently-rolling percussion and slow-burning atmosphere, ‘Song For Rikki’ will appeal as much to fans of Joy Division’s growing gloom as Mogwai’s heaving drones and the echoing white noise of ‘Breslau’ suggests that when the band broke up to pursue other interests a couple of decades back, at least one member started experimenting with film soundtracks.
　　Things aren’t so good when Thom Fuhrman decides to get involved beyond playing his guitar, the frontman mumbling unintelligibly over ‘Torpedo’ and howling depressing nothings during the title track, but most of the time the music here is marvellous. ‘Marshal Tito’ is a welcome shot of grit and aggression, ‘Marshal Vito’ is an ominous and commanding march and the 17-minute centrepiece ‘Caravan’ travels between Eastern rhythms, ghostly moans and melodies that sound as if they’ve been resurrected from the lungs of some long dead tribe.
　　It all comes together to make a record that, whether the world was desperate for it or not, is most definitely worth the wait. Here’s hoping Savage Republic don’t spend so long delivering their next one.
