Scholastic Street Dweller Junclassic (pronounced June Classic) is
an emcee whose capabilities lie deeply rooted in a multi-syllable
flow, varying cadences, and an unabashed emotional depth that
many artists carefully avoid as a result of Hip Hops ubiquitously
superficial machismo. Add to that a forceful delivery entrenched
in a guttural baritone that echoes both triumph and tragedy and
you have a multitalented free spirit with a lot on his mind and a
willingness to express it all with youthful exuberance. Jun is
the last child of two hard-working Jamaican parents who inhabited
the infamous Southside Jamaica, Queens in the mid-70s. The
prevalence of drugs and violence coexisted with Juns amazing
academic achievements, allowing the fledgling emcee to experience
the best and worst of the world at a young age. Rhyming seriously
since 17, Jun was beating on cafeteria tables and trying to
impress his high school peers. It was here where he realized how
innovative punchlines coupled with a smooth, bouncy flow was most
effective in captivating an audience. Yet it took the trials and
tribulations of early recordings to perfect that one thing
missing at the time the voice. "I hated my voice for the
longest!", chuckles Junclassic, "It sounded all nasally and weak.
It took years, but I finally began to dig my voice after a few
shorties said they were diggin it. Thats when I knew I finally
had something." Confident that he developed his swagger, Jun
began hitting the open mic circuit during his college years. Add
to that several years of small time hustling, a penchant for
getting harassed by undercover police, and the harsh reality of
racial subjugation experienced at dead end jobs as well as his
higher institution of learning and Junclassics rhymes got
rougher, realer, and political. Jun has rocked the stage of B.B.
Kings, ran through Club Cheetah, chewed up the China Club, and
jammed at Joes Pub in the Village, to name a few places. His
stage show explodes with unbridled energy. "The crowd does what
the emcee does. So if you just standing there how can you expect
your audience to move? You gotta lead em. And never be afraid.
Theyre only people!" Nearly two years ago, Junclassic took up
production as the result of bad politics with a few past
collaborators. He insists on making instrumentals without the
crutch of samples by utilizing a keyboard. "The dudes people
sample aint sample nobody! Im trying to get to their level. Plus,
I love the challenge of coming up with something innovative and
original. That has always been my driving force with the rhymes,
so why not keep it going with the beats?" Continuing to challenge
himself is Juns passion, now all he needs is the ear of the
people.
