One of the profound pleasures of the 20th and 21st centuries is that we can store art by way of tape, be it analog or digital. The dreams of creative artists are put on a sort of time hold, and future generations can experience their life and music. These direct to digital tracks, recorded in the last segment of Mr. Russell's life reflect the minds of mutual artists in spontaneous improvisation; the give and take of ideas drawing from Russell's deep well of life's melodies and dissonances. Complete freedom from the Chicago arena of improvisers led by session producer Mike Staron, a long time Russell collaborator.
In a packaged world it is fine to see the vessel destroyed, melted and contorted. The percussive arm of drummer Rick Shandling proves to be a feisty bed as ensemble members implode. Pianist, composer and label founder Sparrow joins the gang for three cuts. Sessions were engineered and mastered at Sparrow Sound Design, Chicago by Sparrow and Joanie Pallatto.
