专辑简介

On the eve of its 300th birthday, St. Petersburg, Russia's fabled "window to Europe", celebrates this anniversary presenting a gala of distinguished musical art featuring Anna Netrebko, Dimitri Hvorostovsky, Mischa Maisky and many others. Yuri Temirkanov conducts one of the oldest Russian symphonic ensemble: the St Petersburg Philharmonic.
During the summer of 2003, the city of St. Petersburg celebrated its 300th anniversary. One of the grand occasions during the festivities was the Gala Night in celebration of the musical tradition of St. Petersburg, where none less than Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich had lived and worked. The Gala was one of the highlights of the jubilee and turned out to be a major social event, attracting high-ranking representatives of politics, economy and the arts. Actually, it was almost impossible for the regular audience to secure tickets for the “Philharmonia”, the largest concert hall in St. Petersburg. With the live recording of this memorable and glamorous event, TDK now enables the viewer to enjoy a star-studded night on DVD with internationally acclaimed Russian Singers and Soloists.
Conductor Yuri Temirkanov leads one of the oldest Russian symphonic ensembles, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic and performers include solos by cellist Mischa Maisky, baritone Dimitri Hvorostovsky and acclaimed young soprano Anna Netrebko. Known for her astounding scope and purity of voice, the beautiful young Netrebko is a rising international opera star. The instrumental pieces are dramatic, making every minute of this concert uplifting and entertaining.
The artists of this concert represent the great mastery of the much-valued “Russian School”. Elisso Virsaladze is a much sought after pianist on European concert stages and particularly known to German audiences as a highly welcome chamber music partner and soloist. Moscow-born Viktor Trejakov continues the great and still unsurpassed tradition of excellent Russian violinists. The Cosmopolitan Mischa Maisky studied in St. Petersburg – then Leningrad – and began his career in Moscow before emigrating to the West. He is one of the most pre-eminent and popular cellists and as soloist at home in the world’s major concert halls. With his musical versatility and individuality, he is known to wider audiences. On this occasion he rendered the famous "Kol Nidrei" by Max Bruch and the "Adagio con variazione" by Ottorino Respighi, signature pieces of his highly expressive musicality and paramount technique.
Two international singing stars added even more glamour to the concert: Anna Netrebko and Dimitri Hvorostovsky are highly acclaimed on all major stages from Salzburg to New York. The Sibirian Baritone is on of the most sought after Verdi singers of today. Here he renders – under the baton of Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Yuri Temirkanov – his very own signature pieces: Rodrigo from Verdi’s "Don Carlos" and Count Jelezky from Tchaikovsky’s "Pique Dame".
And then Anna Netrebko! Since her sensational debut at the Salzburg Festival in 2002, she has been hailed unanimously as the absolute shooting star in the world of Classical Music. Her fascinating aura and her amazingly fresh and unspoiled appearance have captured not just classic freaks but the whole spectrum of glossy magazines just as well. She has produced video clips with famous director Vincent Paterson and will take part at the Hollywood production " The Princess Diaries II". On this DVD she enchants the audience in her original domain, classical opera singing. She touches us as the tragic heroine Lucia di Lammermoor and bewitches as the flirtatious Musette from “La Bohème” and as the seductive Nedda from “I Pagliacci”. These operatic figures are quite different in character but united in their ecstatic emotions – just perfect for the breathtaking voice of Anna Netrebko.
