? Together Silvestro di Ganassi – who also wrote an important treatise about playing the recorder - in his Regola Rubertina and sequel Lettione seconda and Diego Ortiz with the Trattado de glosas were the very first composers to write specifically for the viola da gamba. As such their treatises with texts and compositions give an invaluable insight into the performance practice at the time, i.e. mid 16th century.
? Early music specialist Bettina Hoffman gives striking performances of this Renaissance music. To a large extent Ortiz still avoids the later ‘discovered’ more polyphonic possibilities of the instrument. Ganassi clearly expects a high technical level when writing a large number of double stops.
? This recording brings to live music which may have remained of just scholarly importance to quite a few gamba music lovers. Their notation in tablature makes these pieces less than easily accessible for the interested amateur.
