This is the most difficult period of Davis's music and many people didn't get it... then or now. Enter Bill Laswell, a musician/producer with one of the best set of ears in the biz.
Each track is a rebuild, not just a remix, from the original 16 track masters. Laswell's argument was Mile's music in this period was pushing towards a rock sound, even tho the mix done relied on jazz techniques. In spite of the 25 year time-dilation it doesn't sound like revisionism... it leaves you feeling this is the way it was supposed to be.

The rebuild of In A Silent Way is worth the price of admission alone. The only track which doesn't really benefit much from Laswell's efforts is the last one, He Loved Him Madly, which has only minor adjustments and, given it's ambient nature (Brian Eno credited this track with developing his own sense of ambient music), is reduced somewhat in effect, being shortened from just over 30 minutes to just under 15.
A great entry-level album nonetheless. If you always felt you were missing the point of this period in his music, get this. It's like listening to the future in the past.
