The story of Brazilian and Indian musicians blending their music together is a long one and remains one of the most exciting musical journeys. Brazil and India share a love for acoustic stringed instruments and driving percussion. Listen to Brazil's most popular working-class party music - Forr.. - and you can hear strains of the Sabri Brothers, Nusrat Ali Khan, or the other great Pakistani Qawwali harmonium players. Think of impressionable young geniuses like Caetano Velgano and Gilberto Gil returning home to Brazil after a lengthy stay in London in the late 60s taking all of Ravi's influence during his rise in the West. More recently, as hidebound 'world' music has lightened up a little, djs around the world are playing bossa Drum n Bass back-to-back with straight-up Desi beats, whilst hip hop and mainstream RnB producers are mining everything from ghazal soundtracks to 50's samba. And you know what? In some mysterious way, by some unknown route, it all ends up sounding great if it's done with care, love and good humour.
The last couple of years have seen Brazilian and Indian music and culture come to the foreground. In the film world Bollywood's Lagaan and Brazil's City Of God have swept the board at award ceremonies. Video directors are using Indian imagery on hot dance videos like Bassment Jaxx's 'Romeo' and Ad execs are using Brazilian songs like 'A Minha Menina' on cool car ads for the likes of Peugeot -
