专辑简介

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Chamber Music
  By Tim Page
Live recordings from Salzburg, the mecca of Mozart.
Mozart's great masterpieces of chamber music performed by the world's leading quartets, from the Barylli in 1956 to the Emerson (right) and the Hagen in the 1990s. All previously unreleased recordings.
Salzburg is hallowed ground for all musicians and never more so than when they come to play the works of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It is here, under the looming Alps, that the composer was born, made some of his earliest public appearances, wrote his first masterpieces; it is here that father Leopold, sister Nannerl and wife Constanze are buried; it is here that the name of Mozart is hymned to the skies. His image greets a visitor seemingly everywhere, his music sings from concert halls and courtyards — indeed, it sometimes seems, from the ancient streets themselves.
Standards of performance are very high here, and the approval of a Salzburg audience is not easily won. Even prior to the establishment of the Salzburg Festival, the city had honored its most distinguished son with festivals in 1842, 1856, 1877 and then, in one manner or another, virtually every year thereafter. By the time the bicentennial of Mozart's birth arrived in 1956, the advent of recording tape had made possible the permanent preservation of live concerts; two performances from that celebratory summer are included on the first disc in this collection.
Only 175 miles separate Salzburg from Prague, but it must have seemed a much further distance in 1956, at the height of the Cold War, with the Soviet suppression of the Hungarian Revolution only a few months off. Still, the players in the Czechoslovakia-based Smetana Quartet crossed from East to West without impediment, and this warm, empathic and delightfully good-humored rendition of the Quartet in E-flat, K. 428, represents their artistry at its sturdy best.
The Barylli Quartet, which had played in the Mozarteum exactly one week earlier, was famed for its patrician refinement. The seamless sweetness of the group's performance of the Clarinet Quintet (K. 581) with Antoine de Bavier will come as no surprise to admirers of the Barylli's vintage recordings for the Westminster label, which are now much sought-after collector's items.
The Emerson and Juilliard String Quartets had much in common. Both groups were based in New York; both pursued a wide-ranging yet weighty repertory; both brought intellectual probity to everything they played. The Juilliard sound was inseparable from the unmistakably lean, wiry tone of Robert Mann's lead violin. Other groups made a "prettier" sound, but when the Juilliard players were at their best, it was hard to think of another quartet that took a listener so deeply inside the music, with Mann as inspired shaman.
Meanwhile, the Emerson musicians, in a spirit of participatory democracy that might have pleased their namesake, have always steadfastly refused to designate a first violinist at all; from the beginning, Philip Setzer and Eugene Drucker have traded places from piece to piece. I particularly admire the group's spacious, organ-like way with the seraphic set of variations in the third movement of the String Quartet in A, K. 464, in which all the players seem to be breathing as one. Much the same unanimity can be found in the performance of the so-called "Dissonance" Quartet (K. 465) by the Emerson's great Japanese contemporaries, the Tokyo String Quartet.
Finally, the young Hagen Quartet, founded and still in residence at the Mozarteum, concludes the set with the sun-splashed Quartet in F, K. 590 — and the promise of superb chamber music in Salzburg for years to come.
