专辑简介

ArkivMusic: Sviatoslav Richter's claim to the piano music of Sergei Prokofiev could rest alone on the facts that he was the first to play the 6th and 7th Piano Sonatas in public and that he was the dedicatee of the 9th. Moreover (and pertinent to this present recording), it seems to be the case that, after the premiere of the 5th Piano Concerto in Berlin in 1932 with the composer at the piano, this work was not played by any other pianist until Richter played it in Moscow in 1940.
But what is so wonderful about Richter's playing of Prokofiev has less to do with these claims by association as it has with the ways in which the rhythmic incisiveness and unsentimental lyricism of Prokofiev's music seem tailor-made to Richter's outsized musicianship. His finger technique is immense: one will not hear the finales of the 2nd and 6th Piano Sonatas played with such confident break-neck abandon. And yet, as in the Debussian passage-work towards the end of the 4th movement of the Concerto, Richter shows himself capable of producing gentle elegance when it is asked of him.
