在本世纪的英国作曲家中，蒂皮特是和布里顿齐名的，两人并处于英国当代音乐之巅。他在歌剧和交响乐方面都有杰出贡献。
当然蒂皮特最著名的作品还是清唱剧《我们时代的孩子》。第二次世界大战还在继续的1944年，此剧首演于伦敦。剧本由蒂皮特本人撰词，叙述战前的1938年，一名法国犹太男孩枪杀了一个德国外交官，这一事件再度引起纳粹对犹太人加倍疯狂的迫害。不过这部清唱剧中的角色都是虚构的，象征性的；叙述者、压迫者和被压迫者、母亲、小孩等等，都是泛指，有很大的涵盖性。蒂皮特本人曾解释说，这个“孩子”受到代表群体力量的“上帝”的压制。这就不光是控诉法西斯了，也是对整个当代人类境况的深刻反思。
音乐深切感人，种种忧患、愤怒、哀伤和悲悯，都在一个博大的人间情怀的笼罩下真切地倾诉。作曲家还将黑人灵歌以巴赫“众赞歌”的形式引入了这部作品，颇有独创性。
诠释蒂皮特几乎成了戴维斯的专利，甚至比他诠释柏辽兹的权威性更无可争议。
