As pictured on the cover of this LP, Cecil Payne's baritone looks gigantic, and he picture matches the veteran bebopper's tone. For this Charlie Parker tribute, Payne (who also plays a bit of flute) performs several songs associated with Bird, including "Repetition," "Ko Ko" and "Constellation," and one of his originals, "Ninny Melina." In addition to the top-notch rhythm section (pianist Duke Jordan, bassist Buster Williams and drummer Al Foster), Payne is joined by up-and-coming trumpeter Tom Harrell, who is in fiery form. Currently out of print, this high-quality straight-ahead date is one of Cecil Payne's best.
